STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Lutein, Meso-Zeaxanthin and Zeaxanthin are a special class of higher plant carotenoids known as xanthophylls. These molecules serve as photoprotectants for the plants and leaves under environmental stress. In primates, these molecules are specifically taken up by the macula of the eye. These antioxidants serve as singlet-oxygen quenchers, helping to minimize free radical damage generated by the exposure of the lens to oxygen and light.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are yellow pigments that provide color in marigolds and corn, respectively. The yellow color of the macular carotenoids is crucial for the absorption of blue light. The natural functions of carotenoids are dependant on the individual physical and chemical structures of the molecules. Lutein and Zeaxanthin, however, contain hydroxyl groups that interact with the polar head groups of phospholipids, locking the molecules in a position that spans the membrane. This property allows these molecules to react with free radicals generated in both aqueous and membrane phases, which broadens their antioxidant capabilities.
Meso-Zeaxanthin is a third carotenoid found in the macula. Unlike the more familiar Lutein and Zeaxanthin, Meso-Zeaxanthin is not commonly present in the diet, making supplementation the only practical source outside of the body.
